GA-52Cx detects the magnetic field from an iron or steel object hidden underground, in snow or under water. The instrument has two sensors, A and B, balanced so that the Earth's magnetic field does not affect the instrument.

As long as this balance exists, the frequency of the audio signal in the speaker is 40 Hz. But as illustrated in the picture, when the magnetic field from an iron object underground is stronger at sensor A than sensor B, the frequency of the sound signal increases.
